We here at Film Obsession don’t review many musicals and that’s probably because musicals so rarely make it to film. Easter Mysteries presented by Fathom Events in its one night run in 300 theatres across the nation, could very well create a sort of cult like following simply because the music is wonderful.
This is a theatre production so it takes place on the stage, complete with curtains, costume changes, set rearranging, etc. Compared to larger studio produced musicals, this truly is a theatre experience.
Originally I thought only religious folks would take interest in this story as it is of the bible, though now I believe that if you are able to just let the music sweep you up then you will thoroughly enjoy Easter Mysteries. Appropriate for the entire family, this musical gives an added element to the story of Easter and allows you to understand empathize with secondary characters you might not have thought of before.
Just in time for Easter, this tells the story of Jesus’s death and resurrection as well as the strife his follower faced. I imagine it must be difficult adapting something such as the bible, a story so many know or don’t wish to know, and give the musical its own voice so to speak.
The most interesting part of this entire production is how they interpreted voices in the bible and gave them hopes, insecurities, and anger. Even characters with very little relevance in the bible itself professed their secrets. It added another dimension to a story that has been told many times via different mediums.
I loved how racially diverse the cast is, Jesus himself is played by an African American man named Wallace Smith (of the award winning musical Disney’s Lion King). In all, the cast is compromised of veterans from musicals like Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera and Mary Poppins.
The music surrounds you, almost wrapping you up in its meaning. In many ways I was reminded of a Disney film soundtrack as there were many ballads with harrowing instruments following along. As a Christian myself, I thought this was a beautiful telling of these biblical tales.
